[Oak Village]
Since its founding in 1974, Oak Village has been crafting products from the renewable resource of "wood," striving for a sustainable, circular society.
Leveraging the traditional "kikugi" (woodworking) technique and extensive knowledge of wood, we create a wide range of products, from furniture to toys, stationery, lacquerware, and wooden buildings.
[Material]
Using Japanese solid wood in the right place.
With approximately 70% of Japan's land area covered in forests, we are committed to using domestic timber to effectively utilize its forest resources and propose a lifestyle that is in harmony with the environment.
In Japan, where a wide variety of tree species grow, we particularly focus on hardwoods. The hardwoods grown in Japan are diverse, dense, and of high quality, each with its own unique character. In contrast to fast-growing, straight-growing conifers like cedar and cypress, broadleaf trees like oak and birch require highly specialized sawing and processing techniques tailored to the unique characteristics of each species.
By understanding the unique characteristics of each tree species, such as its grain, color, and strength, we aim to fully utilize nearby forest resources in the most appropriate way.
[Technology]
Using the skills of Hida artisans to create products that will last.
To maximize the beauty and durability of solid wood, we use the "kigumi" (framework) technique passed down by Japanese artisans, aiming to create products that will be used for generations.
"Kigumi" (framework) requires an understanding of the characteristics of wood as a material and the appropriate construction method for the intended purpose, requiring advanced processing techniques.
While this construction method is a traditional method cultivated by the Japanese people since ancient times, we are evolving it further, developing techniques to suit the structure and uses of modern furniture and woodwork.
[Design]
Maximizing the Appeal of Wood
Design is not just about pursuing aesthetic beauty; it's also about usability and safety, as well as how to reflect the inherent qualities and atmosphere of the material in its form. For this reason, we strive to maximize the appeal of wood by incorporating the concept of "the right material in the right place" in our designs.
For example, our "Kabano Desk" series uses birch, a broadleaf tree abundant in Japan. The design accentuates the edges, which are only possible with the hard, dense wood. Our wooden toy line, "Anomatope," incorporates motifs of primal shapes found in nature, such as pebbles and tree branches, aiming to help infants and toddlers connect more easily with the natural world outside.
Furthermore, while constantly updating our products to keep up with the times, we strive to enhance the appeal of wood from a design perspective.
Safety Warning
If your child has played with blocks or other playthings by putting them in their mouth or licking them, do not leave them lying around. Immediately wipe off any wet or dirty areas with a dry, clean cloth and allow them to dry and be used again. Leaving them in their original condition may result in mold and mildew, which may be harmful to their health.
